The Kitties
After years of living below the poverty level, I was seriously contemplating quitting being a professional artist. Then I came up with this career-saving series of cats. "Star Kitty," was the first of seven kitties, color pencil drawings I had made in 2000 and 2001. After finishing the first kitty drawing, I went to a shopping mall in New Orleans located on the Mississippi River. One store sold nothing but cat stuff. I was delighted to see that my new kitty design was quite different from other artists' cat designs, and I had a feeling that I was on to something. When the shop owner saw "Star Kitty," she wanted to buy her on the spot. Instead, I promised to sell her reproductions as soon as they were ready. First, I needed to come up with more kitties. I went back to my studio (our kitchen table) and spent several months working on these seven different kitty designs. I designed them by "color," hoping that my customers would buy at least three of them. I made them color coordinated to look nice individually and go together as a set. When I finally finished, I produced some limited edition posters and note cards of all the kitties, and I sold them to the cat shop and many of the art galleries in the French Quarter. Much to my delight, I was suddenly able to pay some bills and for the first time in my life I even managed to pay my rent on time.
It is true, that I am a true cat lover, a gene inherited from my mother. When I made these kitties I was in between cats, and these designs originated somewhere in my fertile imagination. I never looked at anyone else's designs or photographs, but then, I never do.I'd like to add, that "The Kitties," have been very, very good to me, and my advice to every starving artist is, that they too, should draw some kitties.
